The Typing of the Dead: Overkill Review | Genre Whiplash Done Right
You may not think it, but this is honestly quite a competent (and remarkably fun) game, while equally competent as a typing tutor.
You may not think it, but this is honestly quite a competent (and remarkably fun) game, while equally competent as a typing tutor.
On the one hand, we have a polished game, with basic typing mechanics that create an addictive gameplay loop and flow, all while following a loose narrative that’s crazy enough to keep you chuckling and entertained for at least your first time through each of its levels.
On the other hand, we have a relatively competent typing learning software, where you can improve your typing skills by being put under pressure to type more accurately, and faster than you may ever have had to before, scoring your attempts at the end of each stage to accurately reflect you did.
The marriage of these two ideas seems like it would give you some kind of mental whiplash, but it makes for a very compelling game on its own. But the Steam workshop makes this such a better bargain. Being able to mod in whatever words and phrases you want, to appear in the game, is such a welcome novelty, and makes it so you can change how the game feels whenever you’re playing. You might be limited in the number of prompts per stage, but you could go from typing out poorly worded questions from the late Yahoo Answers to quotes, phrases, and words from Seinfeld, and absolutely anything you can think of in between.
While the modding is a neat talking point though, I can’t stress enough that it just feels so cool to destroy those prompts. The devs 100% nailed that, and that’s why I’ll come back around after all is said and done. The simple blasting of the gun noise, exploding faster than could ever be possible, just cracks me up.
Even if none of this typing stuff is interesting to you, I still think that the inclusion of the arcade (non-typing) version of “The House of the Dead Overkill” is a nice touch. If you’re trying for that completionist rating, you’ll have to play through the story at least 4 times… once through on typing, then hardcore typing, then once through on shooting, then hardcore shooting (plus challenges). But yeah! It’ll keep you entertained for as long as you can put up with it!
I will remark on this one thing: This game… having been released in 2013. It’s not worth 20$. And it probably never will be, lol considering the last time it went on sale was 2017. Go to a key resale site (I used CDKeys, linked below). Get it for cheap. That makes it an easy recommendation for me.
