Tetris 99 is one of the few anomalies within my Switch library where somehow, I am always drawn back to it. It’s been years now, but I’ve been there for just about every special weekend event, earning themes and the like. Sometimes I’ll just boot up the marathon mode. It’s one of the only games that has been immune to being purged off of my SD card. It’s a genuinely fun iteration of Tetris that I’m always happy to boot up and play.
These days, we do have the robust and faithful Tetris Effect: Connected on the Switch, and while I love everything about Tetris Effect with its freshness and zen that it brought to the series… there’s something about the quick matches and the simplicity of Tetris 99 that draws me in more often than Connected has, now that I’ve rolled the credits MANY times over in that iteration.
And while the marathon and other additional modes are relegated to a DLC upgrade for a small price, I think they’re worth it even if you do have Tetris Effect Connected, as playing in those modes can help you earn tickets for those lovely themes.
I might not be the best player (I have, in all my years of playing, two wins under my belt at the time of writing), and I might only play for a few sessions at a time every month or so, but that doesn’t change the fact that I have almost 60 hours logged in this tidy little package that I’m always happy to return to.
The only critique I could ever have — I wish there was a mode, still 99 players, but I wish there was a way to get paired with people at your skill level. Some people will burn me for wanting skill-based matchmaking, but it seems all too often these days, you’ll join lobbies with Tetris gods… and while that doesn’t ruin the experience per se, knowing I’m probably going to lose 99% of the time isn’t the best mindset to have when jumping into a videogame hah.
All in all, if you have Nintendo Online, and you’ve dabbled in playing Tetris, this is one game that you really should not pass up, and always have installed. It’s loads of fun, and the seasonal/special events make it just that much easier to jump into every time they come around. NameBrand.
