I love this game. I’m sad to see the Metal Gear franchise brutally murdered because it is one of my favorites. Among all of the games in the series, this final game, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (MGSV), stands out in its unique way.
It PLAYS incredibly well. The controls are super crisp and as the player you always feel in control. The enemy AI is so intelligent, and the stealth mechanics are pristine. You can complete virtually every mission in any way that you see fit, using whatever loadout you’d like, in what is perhaps the greatest stealth sandbox to ever exist. It is a stealth masterpiece. The possibilities are nearly endless, and it allows for a jaw-dropping amount of uniquely creative solutions to any mission.
While a great game, it’s not the strongest Metal Gear game, and what I mean by that is, that the themes, characters, and story elements are lacking as compared to previous entries. Kojima seemed to place extra emphasis on the gameplay and open-world sandbox and it shows. Luckily for Kojima and his team, that’s what makes the game fun. Players shouldn’t expect too much from the story (and in fact, expect an ending that you’re going to have to search on YouTube for missing chapter 51).
As a player who has spent over 100 hours in MGSV, I’ll tell you now, the resource gathering is one giant ‘phantom pain’ that haunts your post-game experience. Seems like Konami wanted some extra cash on top of their pachinko empire, so they dove into the micro-transaction game. Unfortunately for us, this means getting end-game items requires a metric ton of materials to produce, and even when you have that the “research” is gated off by actual real-world time… so of course you’re gonna buy Konami’s crap to get around that right? NO. Don’t worry about that. It’s not worth getting into. Don’t even bother.
Final minor gripe: Not super optimized for PC (and an obvious port at that). Super wish that the MGSV App worked with PC but Konami has said that they’re done with it… If you own a PS4, I’d recommend you play on that, with the companion app, which seemed cool.
Overall, get this game. There are a few things that I can gripe about, but honestly, it’s one of the best gaming experiences I’ve had in years. I haven’t logged this many hours into something in a long long time, and I hope that you will have loads of fun and great times when you play it too.
