Boomerang Fu is a game I picked up on a whim for its cutesy art-style, and promise of party based mayhem. I’m happy to report that it does not disappoint! Right from the get-go, I love how easy it is for everyone I’ve played it with to pick it up and play! Having party games be accessible for players of many different backgrounds is really important to me, and Boomerang Fu accomplishes that right out of the box.
The second most important aspect to a party game for me is variety & replayability, and I’m happy to say that Boomerang Fu is very much both of those things! There are a few different game modes, and loads of boomerang altering abilities that you can find during matches within those. You can only carry 3 at a time, and a few abilities are so overpowered that it can become completely unbalanced, but I think that’s a part of the fun! Then after matches, you can unlock new foods to play as, and while it’s a bit of a drip feed to earn those, it’s a nice touch.
I respect that each game mode can be tweaked with a custom ruleset, in case you don’t want abilities, or you want a different timer, and other game altering rules, which furthers the accessibility. It’s great that the developers allow you to play the game however you and your group find to be most fun and comfortable.
While it’s buckets of fun with friends, I do wish there was more value if you were playing by yourself. You can play matches with computer players, perhaps to practice in anticipation of playing with your friends. With these rich boomerang physics, it’s easy to see the potential a possible puzzle or challenge type mode would have. This could be a great boon for people running low in the friend department… That’ll be on my wishlist for a DLC update or sequel material.
Ultimately, I recommend you pick up Boomerang Fu, and put it in rotation with any other party games you like to play! Because of its fun and ease of accessibility, I think you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who won’t enjoy playing. Most platforms have a demo for the game, if you need additional convincing!
