Just One More Round…
The QWOP-like party game that I didn’t know I wanted or needed! Have really enjoyed bringing this out during social gatherings, and the single player challenges are a nice inclusion. NameBrand.
I found Drink More Glurp by stalking a friend of mine on Backloggd.com through one of their lists of recommended games. Drink More Glurp was there, and it piqued my curiosity. Party games have been abuzz in recent years with the developments of games like the Jackbox Party Packs or even something like Party Animals, so I knew I had to give it a try, even though I hardly knew what I was in for.
I’ve spent some time playing it, and I have to say, I love it! It’s easy for anybody to pick up, and the “pass ’n’ play” style is great for a bunch of people just hanging around a couch. There is a seemingly endless number of goofy combinations of events that you play and ‘sponsors’ which augment how they’re played, making no two events feel the same. The wide variety of combinations can affect your character or the environment, and they’re all so unique and interesting that I want to keep playing, just so I can see what’s next. This is definitely a “just one more round” kind of game, which is fantastic.
Drink More Glurp, I will say, is definitely best suited to PlayStation style controllers. There’s something a bit awkward about moving the non-parallel joysticks simultaneously in order to make the arms move. I’ve been gaming for more than two decades, so I consider myself well versed in all controller styles, but there is something here that just feels slightly off. I can’t be sure if it’s something that could be corrected in the software or if it’s just my brain, but I’d love to see if the devs could implement something software side to account for the offset.
It might be related, but some single player challenges are borderline IMPOSSIBLE. I have the switch version of Drink More Glurp, and to even attempt some of the challenges, we have to vigorously move the joysticks, which is certainly bringing my joy cons closer to the time bomb that is stick drift. But even when I tried my hardest, I could not complete them. It could potentially be a skill issue, I could see this game having a high skill ceiling, but as it stands, I have no idea how someone is supposed to get the gold medals on some of these. I got a bronze medal for every single player event in the game, but to truly go for GOLD… I genuinely think you’d have to be an insane Drink More Glurp pro. You’d be a legend and get invited to the ‘Glurp Olympics’. It’s nutty, and a touch unfair in their difficulty, but perhaps testifies to me that the skill ceiling is perhaps skyscrapers taller than I ever thought could be possible in a game where the only controls are ‘move arms’ and ‘grab’.
Ultimately, Drink More Glurp is a fun party game, that feels endlessly re-playable. It’s easy enough for anyone to pick up and play, and you don’t even need a room full of controllers to get it going with a large group. What’s more, is if you do play it and keep playing it, there are a lot of ways you can test yourself in attempts to hit a very high skill ceiling. If you’re in the market for something like that, I recommend you Drink More GLURP today!
