These Numbers Go Up… But at What Cost?
I’m a fan of numbers going up. If I have absolutely nothing to do, I like to watch numbers go up. This is an okay way to watch numbers go up though the competition is far better. Do not buy their loot boxes or watch ads. Off-Brand.
Honestly, the previous blurb sums it up quite nicely. Every so often I feel like scratching that ‘idler itch’ when the short-form dopamine drips feed starts running dry. It’s a nice, brainless change of pace. AdVenture Communist has been that for me lately. So, when I’ve been up to doing absolutely nothing, I’ve turned the game on, clicked buttons, and watched some numbers go up. The ‘game’ is best paired with an additional screen, so you can watch numbers go up while catching up on some poorly written TV show that you missed out on watching while it was popular 3 months ago.
AdVenture Communist is a serviceable enough idler, and I have a lot of respect for the fact that I can play it without watching any ads or buying loot boxes at all. If I can’t afford an upgrade, or if I’m not progressing quickly enough to some reward tier, it’s not hard to close the game and patiently wait for the next moment in my life that is boring enough to make me want to watch those numbers go up.
Every so often while playing, I’ll have the smallest of grins at their attempts at humorous “communist” pop culture parodies. Truthfully, though, I’m just here to watch the numbers. I feel nothing when I play this game, except for the satisfaction of large numbers becoming even larger. The aesthetic means nothing, so long as the numbers grow…
I’ve played an embarrassing number of idler games in my day, and my opinion as a growing aficionado of the genre is that AdVenture Communist is not as good as Melvor Idle, Cookie Clicker, or Ultimate Paperclips. However, I feel as though because of how this game has been designed around a few microtransactions, it’s going to take me much longer than cookie clicker to max everything out. In a strange and twisted way, I respect the amount of time it will take me to do so as a free to play player. I don’t appreciate that it’s been engineered for people to get addicted and buy loot boxes. But still, a decent way to endlessly watch numbers go up.
There’s only a matter of time until I get bored and realize these hours of my life spent playing AdVenture Communist have been meaningless. At which point, I’ll move back into watching short form videos, or perhaps the next best idler I haven’t tried yet. But, this will do for now. Take that for what you will.
